First to comply with new British health & safety standard

"Although the company already had an effective health & safety management system in place before the appearance of the new standard, it was quite a challenge to make the changes necessary to comply and it is extremely important that everyone - from the managing director to the people on the work floor, is actively involved."

Geoff Waldron
compliance supervisor, Midland Lead

At Midland Lead Manufacturers, we are proud of our long-standing health & safety record and current achievements. Due to the nature of the site and its processes, health and safety have always been of paramount importance, to provide the right environment for both our staff and visitors. Over the years, a considerable amount of time and money have been spent on consultation, training and the development of effective safe systems of work.

Creating the right culture
We are aware that successful health and safety management can only be achieved by adopting and promoting an effective ‘health & safety culture’ throughout the company. All employees receive appropriate health and safety training and are actively encouraged to participate in identifying hazards and assessing risks.

Responsibility towards visitors and vicinity
Legislation requires that companies also have responsibilities for the health and safety of all persons who could be affected by its work activities. This includes all visitors, sub-contractors, delivery vehicle drivers and people who live in the immediate vicinity. Consequently, Midland Lead's visitors are obliged to comply with all company ‘health & safety’ procedures and co-operate with the company to minimise the risks to themselves and any other people who might be affected by their actions.

First to comply with new British health & safety standard
In 2007, we decided that we would adapt and further improve our existing health & safety systems to comply with the requirements of the newly-introduced British Standard - BS OHSAS 18001:2007. And after more than a year of preparations, we’re very proud to be one of the first companies in the UK to successfully implement a BS OHSAS 18001-compliant system!
