Having caught up with the guys at Pagets Builders Merchants at the NMBS show in April this year, we thought it was apt to feature them as one of this month’s Midland Lead customer spotlights.

With roots that date right back to 1959, when plumbers’ merchants Charles Paget and Lawrence Garner founded C Paget & Co Ltd, the firm has changed both hands and structure numerous times. Today, Pagets has established itself as one of the leading independent builders’ merchants in the South Yorkshire city of Sheffield, where its two branches are based.

Despite the 1990s seeing the demise of many South Yorkshire independent builders merchants with many national company takeovers, Pagets has remained independent and family owned.

Robert Copley, director, joined the company six years ago now; a time when Pagets was already stocking Midland Lead’s machine cast lead sheet.

“Pagets has worked with Midland Lead for many, many years now, and it is a relationship that was established before I joined the business. That being said, I have worked with Midland Lead prior to Pagets, having stocked their products at other builders’ merchants I worked for, so I know the company very well.

“Midland Lead offers a competitive price, reliable service and back up is also great, particularly the prompt assistance they give when we have occasional problems,” he says.

Looking back on the last three years of lead sheet sales, Robert says the figures have been steady and strong, and are in line with overall increased business performance. This boost, in fact, has led to a big investment.

Robert explains: “We’ve experienced strong sales over the last few years and are capitalising on that with significant investment in site improvements. In June, we’ll be opening a new warehouse, followed by a new trade counter and sales office in August. This is phase one of many improvement phases, which will include improving yard access and customer parking, among other things.

“We expect these improvements will lead to a further increase in sales. At that point, we’ll be looking at increasing our product range, including stocking more of Midland Lead’s lead sheet sizes. We’ll also be looking into stocking more of the Midland Lead ancillaries range to join what we currently stock – dome sets, multi-slates and fixing clips.”
