Prevent Lead Staining – Use Patination Oil!
With every roll of lead you use, you should be using patination oil too. It helps prevent staining on the lead work or adjacent tiles and brickwork, and gives a nice clear shine to your finished job.

Midland Lead offers a range of ancillary products, developed to use lead to its best advantage, to assure the correct working method or to give the lead work an even better appearance. Below, we will give you the details on our patination oil.
When to use
Midland Lead patination oil prevents unsightly white staining on tiles and brickwork adjacent to new lead work. Our patination oil seals the lead surface from damp and therefore avoids run-off. Moreover, patination oil gives an attractive clear shine to the lead work, can be applied quickly and only costs a few pence per square metre.
How to apply
- Shake the bottle well before use (approx. 2 minutes)
- Clean and dry the surfaces where the oil should be applied
- Thoroughly soak a clean cloth with the oil and apply it, working from the top of the lead panel downwards
- Do not use a scrubbing or circular motion when applying and apply only one coat
- Do make sure the oil is also applied on the underside of all lower edges of lead work and any lead clips
- Occasionally, a second coat of patination oil may be necessary on areas of newly laid but over trodden lead work. This should be applied when all other adjacent building work has been completed.
Technical description
- Made of an alkyd resin containing solvents, drying and flattening agents, thinned with white spirit
- Supplied in boxes of 4 or 10 bottles of 0.5 or 1.0 litre with a non-spill cap
- Appears as a low viscosity, slightly cloudy liquid, giving a clear shine where applied
- Takes about one hour to dry, depending on the outside temperature
- 1 litre of patination oil will cover approximately 60 square metres of lead work
TIP: To get the best results using patination oil, it should be applied no later than at the end of the day’s work.
