General questions about our products and services

Ancillaries are generally purchased with a lead sheet order, but you’re welcome to buy them on their own. Unless you are able to make a bulk order of £500, you will incur a small carriage charge.
Sure! Take a look at the reverse of our handy weight chart first – that should give you the information you need to select the right thickness.

But if you can’t find the information you’re after, or you just want to make absolutely sure, our team of experts will happily help you. Contact us to talk to an expert
No. Not even a little. We guarantee you won’t notice any difference between the two. In fact, if you or your clients were to lay a lead roof using rolled (milled) lead and machine cast lead side-by-side they would only notice the slightest difference in appearance – and no difference in quality or usability.

Still not convinced? Our experts will happily send you a sample roll of machine cast lead to work with!
Code 4 (1.80mm) is the most commonly used code for the construction industry. And that’s generally the code you’ll find in a roofing, building, plumbing or plastic merchants. Code 5 (2.24mm) is also used in some cases.

Industry standard lengths are 3m & 6m with common widths for flashing applications being 150mm, 240mm, 300mm, 390mm, 450mm and 600mm

For more details, download our weight chart.
Both machine cast lead and rolled lead are made to the exact same chemical specification. At Midland Lead we subject all our lead to testing in our on-site lab to ensure it meets our meticulous quality standards: 99.92% pure! The remaining 0.8% is an important part of the blend. We introduce additional elements to make the lead easier to work with in commercial applications.
With a recycled rate of >99%, it’s one of the most sustainable materials used in construction! Lead is durable, recyclable and thanks to its low melting point has a relatively energy-efficient manufacturing process (with a low carbon footprint, to boot). Lead also has a working life expectancy of well over a hundred years. And when it reaches the end of its life? It’s often melted down and recycled again.

Proving its green credentials, lead is now in the BRE Green Guide with a rating of A+ or A.
That’s lead oxide. It sometimes forms if lead is exposed to a damp atmosphere. It’s not a sign of damage or deficiency, but it can cause a problem if the oxide washes off the lead onto brickwork or tiling below.

You can easily prevent these stains by storing your lead in a dry, clean area – on raised pallets. We also recommend you treat the lead with patination oil as soon as the work is completed.
The major difference is in the way they’re made. Rolled lead sheet (sometimes called milled lead) is made by passing a solid slab of lead back and forth on a rolling mill between closing rollers. In the machine cast lead process, a water-cooled rotating drum is immersed in a tray of molten lead – this makes the lead solidify. And as the lead sheet forms on the drum it’s stripped off and wound onto spools.

Both rolled (milled) and machine cast lead are made to the same BS specification (analysis, codes, tolerance, strength and sizes etc.) There is very little difference in quality and appearance – we’re happy to provide a couple of lead samples so you can compare! The only key difference actually benefits you, our customers - machine cast lead is more efficient to make and it has a longer guarantee – 60 years for machine cast lead, compared to 50 years for rolled lead. Midland Lead is also the only lead manufacturer to hold the Environmental Product Declaration which, demonstrates that our machine-cast lead is a fully circular product.

Check out our infographic for a summary of Rolled Lead vs Machine Cast Lead.

Lead ballast for every industry

Here are just a few of the industries that use lead ballast for stability, balance or protection.

sector-aerospace.svg
Aerospace

Lead ballast is used for aircraft balancing, to adjust the aeroplane's centre of gravity and help it to remain stable in flight. In spacecraft, lead ballast is used to balance and stabilise components, ensuring they function correctly during launch and operation.

sector-automotive.svg
Automotive

Lead ballast can improve traction and balance of high-performance cars, by distributing weight effectively. In motorsports, lead ballast is used in race cars to help them meet minimum weight requirements, or to fine-tune vehicle handling.

sector-construction.svg
Construction

Lead ballast is widely used as counterweight in construction equipment such as cranes or lifts (elevators), to balance heavy loads and ensure safe operation. Lead ballast is also used for vibration dampening and to reduce noise, particularly in heavy machinery and large structures.

sector-entertainment.svg
Entertainment

The entertainment industry uses lead ballast as counterweights, to stabilise and balance stage equipment e.g. lighting rigs. Lead ballast is even used in the film industry to create realistic weight and movement in props and animatronics!

sector-maritime.svg
Maritime

Lead ballast is used in the keels of sailboats and yachts, to provide stability and prevent capsizing. The heavy weight of lead lowers the boat's centre of gravity, improving its stability in the water. Lead ballast is also used in submarines to control buoyancy.

sector-military.svg
Military

Lead ballast is used in ballistic testing and armour systems due to its density and ability to absorb impact. Lead is also used in military vehicles where a secure counterweight helps to ensure secure torque and stability, even over rough terrain and in treacherous conditions.

sector-mining.svg
Mining

The mining industry uses lead ballast as counterweights in lift shafts. Lead also supports the ore separation process - the density of lead helping in the gravitational separation process, in extracting valuable minerals from ore.

Lead products for other sectors

We’ve been crafting lead for over 40 years at Midland Lead, so there’s not many industries we haven’t supplied to! We’ve provided lead sheet, lead-lined boards and lead ballast for many different sectors

Entertainment

Lead ballast is an ideal material to act as counterweights and weight distribution in stage equipment

Nuclear

With its high molecular density, lead is one of the most reliable barriers, to absorb and block radiation

Marine & industrial

Lead ballast ensures stability, prevents capsizing in boats, and balances aircraft by adjusting the centre of gravity

Ports & borders

Lead is widely used for radiation shielding in security systems and acoustic insulation at border facilities

how we do it

How we manufacture your lead-lined boards

To maintain end-to-end quality control (ISO 9001 accredited quality system), all lead-lined boards are custom-built to your requirements at our workshop

We cut the machine cast lead to your exact size requirements

A specially developed bonding agent is applied to the chosen board material

The lead is trimmed to be precisely flush with the board

The lead sheet is applied to the board with exactly the right pressure to ensure even adherence

The bonded board is scrupulously quality checked to ensure it meets our rigorous standards and the exact customer requirements.

Choose what suits you

You can choose to line the board with our machine cast lead sheet in standard codes 1-8 (0.45 mm to 3.55 mm) or any thickness in-between. Our standard board size is 2.4m x 600 mm but we can accommodate bespoke sizes in plasterboard, plywood and MDF.
We love to offer a flexible service!

The thickness you require will depend on the application and clinical situation. We’d recommend that you consult a Radiation Protection Advisor before placing your order, and we can connect you with independent advisors for specialist advice.

With lead’s incredible high density, you can use a much smaller quantity than other equivalent materials, to achieve the same counter-balancing effect.  Particularly useful where weight is needed in small spaces, such as in the hulls of sailboats or yachts, or in submarines to control buoyancy.

Lead is easy to cast or mould into any shape. Balls, bars, blocks, castings – you name the shape, size and weight and we can supply it to your exact requirements!

radiation shielding

Why choose lead-lined boards for radiation shielding?

Firstly, it’s a very dense material so a relatively thin layer of lead offers reliable and proven protection against radiation. Secondly, its pliability and low bulk means it incorporates well into building materials, to create lead-lined plasterboard, battens and fillets.

When fitted, the lead is completely hidden from view - securely bonded to high quality plasterboard, plywood or MDF. This means the finished piece is aesthetically like any other high quality, room-lining material, whilst offering complete x-ray protection for staff and patients.
