Our fixing tips

1. Lead-lined walls

Install lead-lined drywalls vertically, with joints running from floor to ceiling. Use plasterboard with a minimum thickness of 12.5mm. Make sure the lead overlaps at vertical joints by 50mm. Fix the lead-lined walls with lead covered screws at 30mm centres along the panel edge.

2. Floors & ceilings

Lead bonded to plywood gives a greater structural strength than plasterboard, and is therefore recommended for use on ceilings and floors. Consideration should be given to the panel weight, which should - if possible – be limited to25kg for ceilings and 60kg for floors. (See our weight fitting guide below)

Lead-lined boards

Due to growing customer demand Midland Lead manufactures lead-lined boards for both soundproofing and radiation shielding applications. Because most of our lead-lined plasterboards and plywood boards are used within the health sector (veterinary and dental surgeries and hospitals), we have made it our priority to see to it that all material is produced to the highest standard and complies with the specific requirements for use in radiation protection applications.

Purpose-made boards
All our lead-lined boards are purpose-made in our onsite lead board workshop. To start with, our premium quality lead is cut and prepared ready for bonding. Standard sizes of the boards are 2.4m x 600mm, but other than standard sizes are also available to order. A specially-developed bonding medium is applied to the plaster (12.5mm) or plywood (12mm) boards. Then the lead sheet, which has a thickness range of 0.44 to 3.55mm, is bonded to a single side of the board by applying the correct amount of pressure for the optimum time period. Once the bond is complete, the lead is trimmed to size by guillotine, making it flush with the board. And last but not least, the bonded board is quality checked to ensure it meets our customer’s specification.

Fitting instructions
If using the lead-lined boards for radiation protection, a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) will be able to advise on the required thickness of the lead and the best method of construction, in order to achieve the most effective level of radiation protection. Recently, Midland Lead teamed up with a qualified and authorised Radiation Protection Adviser to produce a generic guide for the use of plain lead and laminated lead plasterboard and/or plywood in radiation protection applications*. This guide is available to download from our website. The guide advises on the installation of plain lead sheet and laminated lead plywood and lead plasterboard on the inside of X-ray rooms, including fitting instructions for walls, doorframes and around electrical fittings.

* Please do note that this guide should not be used without verification by your local Radiation Protection Adviser.

Weight chart
When using lead or lead-lined boards in structures such as walls and ceilings, it’s important to carefully calculate the weight of the bonded panels before fitting. In the diagram below, you can find the weight (in kg) of our lead-lined boards per square meter.

Smooth deliveries
For standard lead-lined board orders, as outlined above, production time shouldn’t take up longer than 7 working days. But if you would like us to quote for a specialist lead-lined board order, please let us have the full details and we can give you an accurate quote and delivery estimate. Moreover, due to the size and weight of the majority of the lead-lined boards we make, we know that good offload equipment is a necessity to allow for a smooth delivery at the customer or on-site. For most of our lead-lined board orders, we recommend the use of a fork-lift.

Need a quote?
