From 15 September till 15 December ’08 Midland Lead has been raising money for the NSPCC in support of their efforts to help children at risk of abuse and neglect. For every litre of patination oil or box of lead sealant sold during this period, the lead sheet manufacturer has put aside £1.50 for the children’s charity.
During a visit to the Nottingham ChildLine on the 18th of December, a team of Midland Lead staff handed over the money raised throughout this end-of year campaign - a cheque of £5,000 - to the call centre’s senior supervisor, John Gladwell. John: “We’re very happy with the money Midland Lead has donated. It will certainly be put to good use. With this amount we’ll be able to train at least three more counsellors for our call centre - and they ‘re very much needed to answer those calls that would otherwise go unheard.”
The NSPCC has recently started the ChildLine Development Programme to improve its service and to make sure all calls made by children in distress are answered. In 2008, the Nottingham call centre received over 12,000 calls - answered by as many as 85 local volunteers. But the sad fact is, that only two-thirds of the calls made are being answered. That’s why this local call centre hopes to double its number of counsellors over the next year, to allow all calls to be answered. And for £1,600 the experienced ChildLine supervisors at N’ham are able to train a new volunteer counsellor. So really, thanks to Midland Lead and its customers who’ve supported the campaign, we’re helping the NSPCC to answer many more children’s cries for help.
Jenni Cowlishaw, corporate fundraising manager NSPCC adds: “The traditional Christmas period is perceived as a happy time of the year, yet the fact is that over the holiday period ChildLine hears from many children in distress. Due to this, the need to continue to raise funds throughout the festive season is as vital as ever. So we greatly appreciate the support of Midland Lead and its customers and the fantastic amount they have raised to help us to be there for even more children who have nowhere else to turn to.”
